OK, so you've just got engaged - congrats! Shit just got real. It's been approximately five minutes and already everyone you know is interested in every single tiny detail of your day...and you haven't even set up a Pinterest board yet. You might be feeling a little overwhelmed. Like, where do you even start?!? But don't worry...you got this.
One of the questions you may ask yourself is when to start ordering your wedding stationery? And hey! I can definitely help you with this one!
Should I send Save the Dates?
It's all a case of personal preference to be honest, but I can definitely recommend sending them at least a year before your wedding if you are getting married during the school holidays or around a bank holiday, are getting wed abroad, or have guests attending from overseas. If any of these situations apply to you, then consider it. Your guests will appreciate the advanced notice so that they can plan accordingly.
And do you know what...they don't have to be fancy. Don't get over excited and spend tonnes of money on them as this may eat into your budget for other stationery, including your invites. Your invitations are the showstoppers and this is where you want to be attributing more budget.
If you are set on sending out Save the Dates, I would recommend sending these out around a year before your wedding date and certainly get in touch with your stationer 6-8 weeks prior to wanting to send them out. If your wedding is less than a year away...I'd be less inclined to recommend you send them...in this case a simple text or email would suffice, and I would suggest you start thinking about invitations instead.
Did you know...if you book your Save the Dates and Invites together with me, you'll receive a discount on your Save the Dates...now that's smart planning! And if you book all your stationery with me, from Save the Dates through to Invites and On The Day items, you'll receive up to 100x free of charge Thank You postcards to send out to your guests after the big day - get in touch for more information!
The biggest misconceptions with wedding invites is the time required to produce and fulfil them. And also, budget. If you are interested in custom stationery, i.e. not a studio collection or 'off the peg' design, you need to think about getting in touch with your desired stationer around 3-4 months before the date you want to send out your invitations. For studio collection designs, you should give your stationer 3-6 weeks notice. You should be looking to send your invites 6 months prior to your wedding to allow time for RSVPs.
If you have missed these deadlines though, still speak to the stationer you want to book...they may have availability to take on your brief.
In terms of budgeting, studio collections designs are a cheaper way of having a great design which has been well thought out, for a more cost effective price, but please remember that any colour or font changes, or changes to the structure of the invite can incur customisation fees. If you are set on a beautiful, custom design which is bespoke to you and your day, prices vary dependent on the finishes you want and whether any custom illustration work needs to be fulfilled. On The Day Stationery
For all the beautiful complementing stationery that you might need for your big day, you should aim to get in touch with your stationer at least 8 weeks before your big day. And if you are getting married in the summer months, consider either booking your day of stationery at the same time as your invites or getting in touch around 12 weeks before your wedding to reserve diary space. The summer months are crazy busy for most wedding industry suppliers and your stationer will thank you big time for being organised!!
